A Survey of Communication Sub-systems for Intersatellite Linked Systems and CubeSat Missions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Intersatellite links or crosslinks provide direct connectivity between two or more satellites, thus eliminating the need for intermediate ground stations when sending data. Intersatellite links have been considered for satellite constellation missions involving earth observation and communications. Historically, a large satellite system has needed an extremely high financial budget. However, the advent of the successful CubeSat platform allows for small satellites of less than one kilogram. This low-mass pico-satellite class platform could provide financially feasible support for large platform satellite constellations. This article surveys past and planned large intersatellite linking systems. Then, the article chronicles CubeSat communication subsystems used historically and in the near future. Finally, we examine the history of inter-networking protocols in space and open research issues with the goal of moving towards the next generation intersatellite-linking constellation supported by CubeSat platform satellites.

A survey and assessment of the capabilities of Cubesats for Earth observation
In less than a decade, Cubesats have evolved from purely educational tools to a standard platform for technology demonstration and scientific instrumentation. The use of COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) components and the ongoing miniaturization of several technologies have already led to scattered instances of missions with promising scientific value. Furthermore, advantages in terms of develop...
متن کاملA CubeSat-Based Optical Communication Network for Low Earth Orbit
A common challenge in developing small-satellite-based Earth-observation (EO) missions is getting the data to the ground. Typically, most satellites download data via space-to-ground radio-frequency (RF) links, communicating directly with fixed ground stations as the satellites fly within range. For many next-generation EO missions, such as hyperspectral imaging or SAR missions, the volume of d...

متن کاملLow-Profile Antenna Package for Efficient Inter-CubeSat Communication in S- and V-band
Even space-borne deep space observation missions such as OLFAR require very large apertures (>10km). A CubeSat cluster is the only practical and affordable method of achieving such a large aperture in orbit, for the foreseeable future, but cannot be used until certain inter-CubeSat communication challenges are addressed. In this Paper, we review the challenges, focusing on the size limitations ...
